When talk turns to Republicans we progressives can admire, the names of Abraham Lincoln & Theodore Roosevelt usually are invoked. Yet there are more, like Tom McCall, governor of Oregon (& a man whose political views I would place to the left of Barack Obama). There was Fiorello LaGuardia; Robert La Follette (both father & son); and Earl Warren, Republican governor of California & Chief Justice of possibly the most leftist Supreme Court the US has ever experienced.
Where are their successors? Where are the Republicans of yesteryear?
